Bouncing around a bit on a Thursday morning:

Yesterday I did not come in to work until around 8 a.m. which would be the norm for most working people but 4 ½ hours later than usual for me.  The downside was I experienced traffic on Route 9 and there were cars in front of me at Dunkin’ Donuts.

The upside was some bonus sleep, it’s nice to shower and dress when it’s not pitch black outside and I wasn’t falling asleep at my desk by early afternoon. It was only a one-day reprieve from my regular schedule but I have to try and do that a bit more often.

About 65 members of the Toms River High School Class of 1964 will be taking part in a 50-year reunion this weekend which represents nearly 20% of the 349 graduates, pretty impressive 50 years later.  Festivities begin Friday night when football team members will be honored at halftime of the Indians game against Jackson Memorial and there will also be a social gathering at Klee’s Bar and Grill in Seaside Heights.

Klee’s co-owner “Butch” Anderson is a member of the Class of '64 and was part of the first Toms River team to win a state baseball title along with classmates like Ed Graichen, Dave Cummings and Paul Raffer.  The reunion weekend will include a dinner Saturday night at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center and a tour of what is now Toms River High School South on Sunday by school historian P. David Correll.  Among classmates who will be in attendance is former Asbury Park Press sportswriter Joe Adelizzi and I’m sure there will be some great stories told over a cocktail or two.

I’ve said it for some years and I will continue to say it: baseball may be our “National Pastime” but football is really America’s first sport.  Game #1 of the World Series between the Royals and Giants set a record low for TV ratings for series openers and it broke a dubious record set just two years ago.  The fact is baseball has become a regional sport and this World Series will be ignored by many if not most Yankees, Mets and Phillies fans.

Pinelands Regional has picked up its first win of the football season as Donovan Catholic had to forfeit its 10-7 victory in the season opener on September 5th because they used a player who was not cleared to play.  Officially the Wildcats are now 1-5 while the Griffins fall to 0-6.
