The Meaning Of Public Service
After 30 years with the Beachwood Police Department Bill Cairns has joined the ranks of the retired and this week the borough swore in one of their own to replace him as Chief of Police.
44-year old Robert Tapp goes from Lt. to Chief after taking the oath of office from Mayor Ron Roma on Wednesday night. Tapp grew up in Beachwood and is a graduate of Toms River South. He has been a full-time police officer with the department since 1994 and was a popular choice of replace Cairns, who served as Chief since 2006.
The new chief is very active with the Beachwood Soccer Club as he coaches two teams…he himself played soccer while growing up in the town and later at TR South. Congrats and best wishes to him and all the best to Chief Cairns in his retirement. Two good men who know the meaning of public service.
Central Regional High School will host a baseball doubleheader tomorrow as part of what is the 1st annual Strike Out Autism Baseball Challenge. Central will take on St. John Vianney at 11:30 and following that Toms River South will face Red Bank. While those games are being played at nearby Veterans Parks there will be food vendors, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting and more.
The event is the brainchild of former Central and St. Rose baseball coach Jerry Frulio, who runs Central’s Autism Awareness Club. Jerry and his wife are the parents of a 5-year old son Dylan, who is autistic. From his diagnosis they have been staunch advocates and promoting autism awareness.
Saturday’s event is free but donations will be accepted and vendors will donate back profits to be split between Parents of Autistic Children and Autism Speaks. Looks like tomorrow will be a nice day and it would be worth stopping by to support a great endeavor.
It turned out to be a pretty typical opener for the Lakewood BlueClaws last night. Temperatures dropped, fans were dressed more for a football game than baseball game and the BlueClaws lost to visiting Kannapolis 9-2. The BlueClaws have lost 11 of their 13 home openers and will remain at FirstEnergy Park through Wednesday.

Okay Yankee fans…you can come in off the ledge. Last night the Yanks beat the Red Sox to insure they won’t go the entire season without a win.
