The Shore’s Second Season

You get what you pay for and you’re not getting much this morning after a night in which I finally fell asleep at 2:22am only to get up 35 minutes later.

Needless to say I’m about as sharp as the Ravens defense was last night (they gave up a franchise record 49 points in a loss to Denver).  So let me limp through some random notes and thoughts this morning:

The first weekend after the unofficial end of summer looks like a good one, especially if you have any outdoor plans.  Seaside Heights will host its annual Seafood Festival on Sunday from 10am-7pm on Grant Avenue from Central Avenue to the boardwalk.   The weather looks perfect for the event which features food, music, vendors and crafters.

The high school football season gets into full swing next week but there is actually a game on the schedule tonight as Monsignor Donovan takes on St. John Vianney as part of a weekend showcase at Kean University featuring parochial schools.

The Griffins will be among the most interesting teams to watch in the early going as they are coming off a 6-4 season and won their first divisional title in 20 years.  They return quarterback Vinny Grasso and are expected to get a boost from a quartet of transfers from Toms River North in running backs Joey Fields and Tre’von Bass, receiver Kyle Carrington and tight end Jimmy Cleveland.

Donovan will also be looking to avenge a humbling 40-0 loss to Vianney a year ago.

Maybe just maybe the Cincinnati Reds’ Todd Frazier has found the swing that made him one of the top rookies in baseball last season.  Frazier had a game-winning hit on Tuesday, collected two hits Wednesday and last night homered twice to lead the Reds past division rival St. Louis.   The Toms River resident hit his 14th and 15th home runs of the season with a single in between and has 8 hits in his last 16 at-bats.

The Reds are battling the Cardinals and Pirates in the National League Central although it appears all three teams are headed to the playoffs.

A reminder to you “Boardwalk Empire” fans.   “Nucky” Thompson, his crew and rivals return for a fourth season to Atlantic City with time spent in Chicago and New York as well.  The new season of the hit HBO show begins Sunday night.
