Walmart Gets Final Approval

After years of delays, Toms River Township will soon have a Super Walmart. 

The almost 200-thousand square foot mega-store will be built at the corner of eastbound Route 37 and Northampton Boulevard, across from a Wawa.  Part of the store will be in Toms River, the other part in Manchester.

Officials have been very excited about the project and are happy it’s finally getting off the ground.  This week, the owners of the property cleared one of the last major hurdles; getting necessary approval from the state.

It’s been almost eight years since Jay and Linda Grunin, the husband and wife developers, first proposed the idea.  At one point, an endangered pine snake on the property was holding things up.  There were also concerns from environmentalists about the harm it could cause to the Barnegat Bay.

Now the state Department of Environmental Protection has given their OK to issue a construction permit.  The retail center will include a full supermarket, 5,703 square-foot seasonal garden center, parking for almost 900 cars and a wall to protect that snake, which is still living on site.

The new Super Walmart would replace the existing one on Route 37 near Mule Road. Construction will start in the next few months.
