Downtown Toms River launches a new Toms River BID gift card program this week in hopes of keeping spending local. Executive Director Jody Alessandrine says the cards work like mall cards and are redeemable only at the participating downtown Toms River Businesses.

Alessandrine says from a consumer standpoint it’s a good way to help keep spending in your hometown and support local businesses. He says “from a business perspective it’s really a no brainer. As long as you accept credit cards, you can accept this and no other fees to either the consumer or the business person.”

There’s also an added benefit. Alessandrine says the cards provide a measurable way to track consumer traffic and spending in the downtown area. He says that gives prospective business operators hard numbers on which to base decisions to place their business in the district.

Alessandrine admits that Downtown Toms River invest money on popular special events through out the year that draws thousands of visitors. However, he says “you have to have other things in place to get them keep coming downtown. Not just to come downtown a few times a year for the special events and never come back.”

Downtown Toms River Gift Cards will be available anytime online at downtowntomsriver.com, as well as physically in the Downtown Toms River office, located at 218 Main St. from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
