If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be collecting fines on behalf of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, check the number - and if you don't have caller i-d, hang up and call the Prosecutor's Office yourself. It's a nationwide scam.

Word from County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato's office today revealed that residents are hearing from people claiming to be law enforcement officers or attorneys, demanding money, and threatening arrests for failing to comply.

The longer it takes you to cut the call, the more time a scammer has to convince, cajole, or threaten you into revealing bank account numbers, social security info, credit card data and other details that could leave you penniless.

Members of the High Tech Crime and Digital Forensic Units have, at this point, traced most calls to 888-609-1428, and have verified that it's happening across the U.S.

Coronato stresses that neither he, nor anyone in his office, places calls to homes or businesses to solicit money or collect fines.
